About Osteochondral Lesions
Osteochondral lesions (aka osteochondral defects) consist of damage to the articular cartilage that covers bone surfaces at joints, often in conjunction with damage to the underlying bone.
Osteochondral lesions (OCL) of the talus often result from trauma such as fractures or ankle sprains.
Articular cartilage has little intrinsic ability to heal. As a result osteochondral defects are often persistent in the absence of intervention.
Osteochondral defects of the talus may result in substantial long-term pain and dysfunction.
